Fork Lift Operator Safety

Aims

To provide participants with the knowledge and skills to safely drive and maintain this type of machine

Objectives

By actively participating in this course students will be able to:

  • Have an appreciation of the relevant health and safety legislation
  • Operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and accepted good practice
  • Carry out a pre-shift inspection
  • Be able to load / unload the forks
  • Be able to carry out minor adjustments and routine service
  • Have sufficient knowledge and practical skills to successfully complete the course assessment

Course Content

  • Statutory Regulations: The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Use of handbook and other information sources including legislation and Approved Codes of Practice
  • Basic construction, names of components, purpose and function of components, controls and gauges
  • Operating techniques
  • Pre-use, starts, running checks and close down procedures
  • Precautions taken for underground and overhead services as well as other hazards
  • Manoeuvring, progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction and inclines
  • Load characteristics
  • Position and set-up of the machine prior to lifting/lowering
  • Lifting and lowering at ground level and at height, stacking, manoeuvring, 90* turns, loading and offloading
  • Use of emergency controls
  • Hand signals
  • Carry out minor adjustments and routine service procedures
  • Course assessment which includes theory & practical elements
